Shouts & Murmurs from this week's New Yorker: A style guide for the new millenium:
Healthy writing is unfocussed and blithering. A sentence should not be trimmed of unnecessary words, for the same reason that a fork should not be inserted into your forehead: self-preservation. "The fact that" is a particularly salubrious expression, and it and similar phrases should be introduced into a sentence whenever possible. Wednesday
New Theory in Foal Deaths. Cyanide-laced caterpillars. Yikes.
Tuesday
Test of Revolutionary Jet Promises to Transform Flight. I, for one, would be much, much too chicken to travel this fast. On the other hand, "Scramjet" would be a great name for a puppy.
Saturday
Violent Crimes Undercut Marijuana's Mellow Image. I'll say. And you have to love smartass detectives:
"Some people may think the drug is benign, but the distribution network certainly is not," said Deputy Chief Michael Tiffany, commander of the Bronx Narcotics Division. "For some of our policy makers, people who are not cops, sometimes their only connection to marijuana was watching the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore East. Times have changed. None of the dealers in the Bronx are smoking joints and discussing Nietzsche."
Notable to males of my generation and tastes: Douglas Adams, Author of 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,' Dies at 49.
Friday
Excellent lit. reference site, new to me: ibiblio literature.
Another Poetry reference site.
100 Days of Bush. Not a porn site.
Monday
'Apocalypse' Then, and Now. A newly restored and expanded "Apocalypse Now". Can't friggin' wait.
Saturday
Looks to me to be a potentially very profitable scam for those who missed out on the Pet Rock craze: Trade growing in stolen meteorites. Ebay, ebay, ebay.
Thursday
Getting the Athletic Edge May Mean Altering Genes. This is an interesting story. The author notes, "Ultimately, at the heart of the issue will be a profound question: what is a human athlete?" A compelling question indeed.
Wednesday
Short guide to a happy marriage. New Scientist continues to report on the really outstanding studies being done in the world:
They found that more than twice as many tall men as short men divorced and remarried. The simple reason for the infidelity of the tallest quarter of men was that they had more opportunities to stray. |
Weekly Notes:
